Dear all PAPNEH and friends,
I'd like to share with you some tasting pleasure and dis-pleasure as well. All of these are things
I tasted for the first time in my life last year.
Let's start first with the displeasure (luckily there was only one :-)) This will come across as
a sacrilege to some of you no doubt... but I found cassoulet to be a total turn-off. It is so rich,
that I could hardly finish … one bite ! I guess you have to like baked beans to like cassoulet :-)
From Carcassone with displeasure :-P …....... le cassoulet !
Then the most surprising pleasure is this reine-claude prune soaked in liqueur and eau de vie I tasted in St Emilion, a must tasting pleasure.
On to tasting pleasures for the sweet toothed :-) Croquants aux noisettes, amandes, noix, you name it ... you'll find them all over the Carcassone,
Albi, Cordes area. They are quite delicious, very thin and croquant and not too sweet. YUM!
Then in the Basque area, you have the gateau basque, a tasting pleasure … if you like almond paste or marzipan coz it's filled with it :-)
Paries the La Duree of Biarritz and St Jean de Luz
Of the many local versions of … macaron (all much bigger in size than their Parisian counterparts) the mouchous (muxu in basque = bisou) below
are pretty good.
Then there are the touron - sort of like nougat but softer and sweeter, more like marzipan. They also come in very colorful rolls like sushis.
OK, I'll stop as I think you are already ... over sweetened :-)

Hi BT
ReplyDeleteInteresting post, I'm not familiar with the specialties from the Basque region. I'm with you, never enjoyed cassoulet or beans in general, although when traveling to Mexico or central America, beans and rice are food staple... and they're supposed to be nutritious!
The other delicacies seem overly sweet... I'm not a big fan of marzipan, I may enjoy galette des rois once a year, that's it.
Les croquants aux noisettes sound delish though!
Thanks for sharing
Caro
BiTi Babee,
ReplyDeleteshould I say "lac. dde^\" to your first picture??? :-).
I particularly love the photos of Reine Claude and Gateau basque, and also Touron, very sharp and delicious looking. Did not know you have such a sweet tooth.

My dear gourmands -gourmets,
ReplyDeleteBITI, as I am not fond of sweets, I love the 2nd photo .
Only 5 Euros ? C'est donné ! Very very nice picture.
The green colour is just amazing.
We have a reine- claude tree which gives the best
fruits on the world , next to the mirabelle-tree,alas
sadly died last year, after 40 ans de bons et loyaux services.
Tu connais la liqueur de mirabelle ? c'est à tomber par terre.
Bravo! CTT
