Going dotty in the garden (my last entry on Polka Dots promised :-))

Dear Em Ci Twin and PNEH friends,

 Well, it looks like the hydrangeas are going dotty (or is it

freckled? ) signaling the end of the season for them. 

I like to leave them on the bush until they turn all golden

silvery, a total different look from the pink-purple-blue 

at the beginning season.  

We have had many blooms this year probably from

 HL's smoke I mean watering hi hi   Lan oi, they are

waiting for your return :-)

Have you noticed that none of the PNEH gents

has gone dOtty yet? :-) I wonder why?  

Did you ever wonder how the name pOlka dOts came about?

One web source claims the following stOry :-)

The ugly frog is transformed into a handsome and dapper prince by a simple, heartfelt kiss. He becomes beautiful because the princess believes he is so, a sentiment also reflected throughout fashion's history. The tale of the polka dot is no different; it's troubled childhood took place during the medieval era, where it became infamous for its visual comparison to the scattered and circular appearance of measles, boils and other infections. At the height of the renaissance, the polka dot began to earn a more tolerable reputation in cosmetics in a trend known as "patching." Also referred to as "moucheron," which translates from French into "little fly," patching involved  women strategically attaching circular pieces of fabric to cover up facial blemishes. 

It was the 20th century that truly saw the beginning of the polka dot's lasting role in fashion history. In 1928, Micky Mouse's female companion, Minnie, was born in the Walt Disney illustration studio dressed in a polka dot skirt, a trademark of the animated icon. During the 1940's and '50s, the polka dot graced the gowns of female celebrities from Marilyn Monroe to Elizabeth Taylor, during the same time period Christian Dior began to release his notable hourglass dresses in spotted prints. The polka dot dress became a staple for Lucille Ball's wardrobe in I Love Lucy. Gaining global recognition, the polka dot has not looked back towards it's troubled past. Time has only brought continuous success to the polka dot; Marvel comic books created a superhero in its likeliness, Mr. Polka Dot! And how can we forget Brian Hyland's 1960 hit "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini"? To this day, the polka dot makes a continuous appearance in fashion week. It's a favorite motif among designers such as Rei Kawakubo of Comme Des Garcons, Miuccia Prada and Stella McCartney. In a documented meeting between Marc Jacobs and Yayoi Kasama, the Japanese visual artist gave the fashion designer a rendition of his own Louis Vuitton bag decorated in her signature polka dot cascade. While the exchange signified a collaboration that could have been but never was,  Kasama's influence can still be seen in Jacob's Fall 2011 collection.

Attended an amazing Gc event in Tokyo...
Here's the story: The event  celebrates Japanese rising stars in their own field, a Tea Ceremony Master, a Sushi Chef, a Singer, a Kimono Stylist, an Ikebana Artist...
The Singer, Tomoca, a young lady who combines traditional Japanese songs with English pop is really pretty and friendly and wears a denim kimono with an LV obi, how cool is that? On the other hand, Mami Kisaragi is a Kimono Stylist, she puts together a kimono like a work of art... 

The Sushi Chef, Kenjiro Hatch Hashida, is super talented and nice, he runs one of the most successful sushi place in Tokyo and also caters to celebrities from all over the world, and during the event, he proposed on stage to his sweetheart, a gorgeous Canadian Japanese ex-model, aarrggh, so romantic... and of course she said yes! You can see it all in this smilebox, but for a clearer look of Tomoca in her denim kimono, see the attached photo!

That's it folks, back to work now.

Dear BiTwin, fellow PNEHs, painters, poets, Mai Quang and Forum friends

I did wonder at the beginning when my twin came out with the theme pOlka dOts, whether she had a little secret admiration for artist Yayoi (a bit of a tongue twister IMHO :-)) Kusama and this was her way of paying tribute to the artist by making us look for polka dots..
I soon found out that some of the polka dots entries submitted by HL and BiTi were products of Louis Vuitton's collaboration with artist Kusama. Coincidence or conspiration? :-):-):-)
Any way, as a true coincidence, last night when we drove past the Whitney Museum on Madison Avenue, I noticed gigantic red beach balls with white polka dots, inside the museum near its entrance. So I took my chance and asked my son Chuong whether it would be a big problem to make a little stop. He then asked me why, so I told him about the balls and our pOlka dOts theme.
To my surprise, he very nicely replied that we could stop for my photos, but it would become a problem with the traffic cop if I took too long. So I crossed my heart and promised it would not take me more than a few minutes, forgetting that it was a promise impossible to keep :-):-), jumped off the car quickly so he would not have time to change his mind, and ran to the museum entrance only to find out that it was already closed for the day. However, through the glass walls, I was able to take pictures of the balls which were hanging from the ceiling like planets in a galaxy .
Curious about the balls, I googled the Whitney current exhibitions, and Kusama's name came up. The exhibition is supported by...surprise...Louis Vuitton. I also learned that the Whitney has a special exhibition by Kusama called Fireflies on the Water where visitors could only enter one at a time so they would fully experience the sensation.

Walking along Ginza main street, one can't help noticing a huge silvery white building with an enormous bitten forbidden fruit on its facade and a giant laptop in its show window... 

The Apple flagship store is huge and sleek, commanding prime real estate in the heart of Tokyo... 

Gathering in front of the store is a handful of die-hard fans lining up for the new iphone5, bear in mind the launch is couple of days away... but this doesn't seem to faze these tech geeks in the least, they are getting comfy, with their folding chairs and bowls of noodles... 

I'm sure the crowd has swollen by today. Apparently for the ipad launch in Tokyo, there were over a thousand of people waiting in line for days in front of this very store!

Here's my pictures with a story....

Walking back to my hotel today, I pass by the Zojoji temple of the Jodo sect of the Japanese Buddhism. It was built in 1393 and moved to its present location in 1598.

The main entrance gate, the Sangedatsumon, stands strong and sturdy, having survived many past fires, earthquakes and wars.

An interesting combination of traditional Tang inspired temple standing next to modern architecture, the Tokyo Tower

Definitely a place to pay my respect, as the Zojoji temple is dedicated to Jizo, the patron saint of travelers...

Pictures with a Story

Dear Em Ci Twin and friends,

Here's my entry for this week's theme of Glacier/Iceberg, I mean 

travelogue pics with a story (how's that for killing all the birds with

the same post? :-))

The first photo is of Mendenhall glacier in Juneau -the capital of Alaska,

which thought it was Anchorage until now :-)  




The 2nd photo is a close up of Mendenhall ice face, seracs, crevasses

 and calves (icebergs). For curious Gorge(tte)s, glaciers are non-moving

entirely above water level) formation and icebergs (which on the

average only 10% exposed abover water) are floating calves.

There is a beautiful waterfall near the glacier so if you do visit, 

don't forget to take the Nugget falls trail to get there, we unfortunately 

didn't have enough time to hike up onto the glacier which supposedly 

could be done via yet another trail.

The 3rd and 4th photo are of Tracy Arm Fjord where you can see more calves

floating serenely in the water 

The 5th and 6th photo are closeup of icebergs ... some bluer than others.

And last but not least, the Sawyer Glacier which the ship was able to get

real close to. The captain had a small crew go down and bring back a

block of the 10,000 year old ice which some of us had a taste of ... well

whatever their stuck tongue (yuk !) can taste of the ice (double yuk! :-))

Another entry for pOlka dOts

Dear BiTwin, fellow PNEHs, painters, poets, Mai Quang and Forum friends,

I thought I was done with pOlka dOts, but I was wrong. I love this theme more and more, I've been having lots of fun looking for polka dots and taking pictures. What can I tell you, when my twin is right, she is absolutely, definitively right. :-)
Here is my additional entry, entitled pOlka dOts of light on chocolate pOlka dOts, with special thanks to Musketeerette no. 3 for the chocolate pOlka dOts.
While you will be looking at this entry of mine, I will be savoring the heavenly hot chocolate made out of the polka dots.

Dear MC and Friends

Due to an extremely heavy schedule, I could not post too much to the forum lately. Attached at your request are a few kid portraits from Bhutan. The kid's traditional school clothing is so cute and adorable. I hope you like them.

Btw, the little Bhutanese girl photo is now in color. Also if I recall correctly, the proverb did not say anything about women specifically. :)

Going 'dotty' :-)

Dear Em Ci Twin and Friends,

 Well, I see that my Twin has gone 'dotty' after all :-)  I love all your dots 

from Caro's yummy ones to Em Ci's colorful to HL's esoteric (check my

entry hi hi) ones. 

 I also enjoyed so much being on this side of the fence for once, and

totally appreciate the beautiful kids entries submitted by our PNEHs,

OC's gorgeous diapo set the my Twin gorgeous :-) music selection...

Quang's gorgeous comments ... so much so ... that I think I'll stay a

spectator from now on ( OK my Twin? :-))

Alaska was beautiful, I took tons of photos, so ... how about glacier or 

wood or totem poles for our next theme? hi hi

As to my entry for polka dots, here goes
